Lisa Stewart – violin

Born in Sydney, Lisa began playing the violin at the age of five with Suzuki teacher Hiroko Primrose. She continued with Yasuki Nakamura, performing solos throughout Australia and represented Suzuki Australia in Japan, the United States and New Zealand, performing Mozarts violin concertos at the age of 11.

Continuing studies with Christopher Kimber, Lisa won 1st prize National Strings at the Wenkart Competition Australia in 1988, was a string finalist at the ABC Young Performers Competition in 1988 and was granted two Australia Council Grants, which provided her with a scholarship to study in Germany with Igor Ozim. During this time she also worked with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.


Lisa then spent the next 13 years living in Germany, studying with Igor Ozim and the Amadeus String Quartet, whilst performing and recording internationally. Lisa specialized in the violin & piano repertoire and recorded French violin sonatas for the Klavins Music label. She also played with Concerto Koln, Cologne Chamber Orchestra, Gurzenich Orchester Koln, WDR Sinfonieorchester, Orquesta Ciudad de Granada and was a member of the Beethoven Orchester Bonn.


Highlights include Guest 3rd Concertmaster with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Bernard Haitink and solo recordings of Bach Double Concertos for oboe & violin (with Christian Hommel) and 2 violins (with Christine Pichlmeier) on the Naxos label with the Cologne Chamber Orchestra.


On returning to Sydney in 2001, Lisa has enjoyed being Guest Concertmaster of the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra (under Richard Bonynge), West Australian Symphony Orchestra and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.


Lisa has enjoyed residencies at Arthur Boyd's Bundanon both as a violinist with the group Ironwood and an illustrator. Her first children's picture book, Can I Cuddle the Moon? was published in April 2010 by Scholastic Press.
